Throughout my career as a music producer, I’ve had the opportunity to work with artists from the most diverse musical styles and genres (Rnb, Trap, Gospel, Indie, Brazilian Music, Rock and others) and one thing in common that I’ve identified in my consultancies and talking to other professionals, is “how to grow like the pros?”, that the biggest difficulty lies in the exposure of the artist or song, because practically everyone complains about the same things: it takes a lot of time, a lot of money, in addition to engagement being something unpredictable on the internet and well… I can say that there are many truths and misconceptions in these statements.
Nowadays, the internet gives us a much greater opportunity than a few years ago, when the only people who managed to succeed in their careers were those who got a contract with a record company, because today you just need to have good music and good strategies to reach those who want to hear you, but don’t know you yet.
Â
To help you understand what I’m talking about, I’m going to tell you about Jacob, a waiter who, despite being self-taught, was an excellent musician and dreamed of touching many hearts with his profound lyrics, based on moments in his life.
He already had two critical criteria to succeed in the music market: Lots of will and great songs. With this he began his journey performing in some bars, charity shows, on the street and also posted some videos on his instagram. As time went by he won some fans and some money, but after just over 8 months he saw that the peak of that growth had passed and he had not left the same point, besides seeing that other less talented artists, with such poor songs were conquering the space for which he fought so much and with that, all his motivation began to turn discouragement.
When Jacob looked for answers on websites or videos, heard several people saying about digital marketing, constancy, weekly or monthly music releases, Lives, various “secrets” to succeed in music that in the end became so much to do just on the internet, in addition to their work and shows that 24 hours a day were not enough – and rightly so.
But he knew that if he continued the way he was, he would not take his career forward and the worst, he would see another person reap everything he had planted for so long, being forced to follow an unhappy life, having to work 2 or even 3 times more in different jobs to earn the same as you could as an artist.
But he didn’t really have enough time and money to do everything the “marketing experts” said to do in the videos, so he found himself increasingly motivated to give up.
Â
Maybe you identified with most of the things that Jacob went through – if you didn’t identify with all of them – But what Jacob didn’t know, is that it’s possible to do a good job, professionally, in digital marketing reconciling with your job, production and release of songs and shows without overloading.
The answer to this is in two words: Strategy and Planning.
This is no longer a “secret to success” but learning gained from much study and experiences in the market.
When we look at work as Jacob, we will come across a lot. You need to compose your songs, produce them, make the release, disclosure, attract the attention of the public, engage your listeners and followers, have a constant presence on social networks… it seems a lot, but all these tasks have their time to be done, we just need to organize them strategically.
Â
The First Point I make to my clients in consulting is that the basis of a good job is to have a consistent project so that the rest can be developed with quality. What is this “project”? – I usually always recommend an EP.
The reason is that it comes out much cheaper than an album, has 4 to 5 songs that can be released throughout the semester or year and has a greater credibility with the public or to make your networking than just several singles, because it follows a concept, the release of the songs can be done individually and the disclosure can be about each song or the EP (the concept of it) giving more possibilities of content for dissemination beyond several other benefits
The Second Stage is the composition and production of the songs based on the theme of the EP that was defined.
At this stage you end up getting a higher and more acertiva productivity by already having a defined path, so you can save a lot of time and money.
After the songs are ready, we will proceed to the Third Stage of dissemination of the project. In them we can have total focus, because as the EP is already ready, do not have to worry about releasing new songs, only to disclose those that are already ready.
Before the release of the songs is important to define how the disclosure will be made. So you will be able to organize your ideas, create more elaborate and efficient content about your project, date of posts, pre save, and generate engagement for your social networks. Be creative!
An important point about this step is that we need to be strategic about the content we’re going to create. There is something called “Mental Triggers” in digital marketing, which will be very useful to help you grow as a professional in music.
Mental triggers are ways for you to awaken in the public the need to buy or adhere to something you are offering – in our case would be listening to the songs. For example, You can awaken the feeling of urgency with phrases “time is running out” or “last units in stock”, thus making the customer more impulsive at the time of purchase.
I’ll leave here some post ideas to inspire you:
– Post videos showing how was the process of creating and recording each song of the EP, the stories that inspired you to compose some music
– Videos of you recording in the studio or in your home and so on. People love to see how something was done, it arouses their curiosity.
– Record the reaction of people when they hear your music for the first time, it arouses their curiosity to hear you – “This song must be very good indeed”, “Wow I think I’ll like to hear it too”…
– Ask some influencer to create a video about his music – It can be a dancer recording a video of him dancing his music, a singer doing duet, doing React…
The Fourth Step is the releases of the songs, where the disclosure no longer be focused on what will come to what has just left, focusing on taking the audience to the streaming platforms to listen to you.
Â
Believe me, these four simple steps will help you take your career to the next level!
Maybe now you may be wondering “how” or “where” to start building an EP to execute your marketing strategies, or even thinking you don’t have enough money to produce an EP. It is something common, because it also requires investment and many charge expensive without paying attention to who is in the beginning.
But the good news is that there is a launch that will help you with this!
